Sunday’s event will be run from the stage area near the western side of the gardens, with starts between 10am and 11am. There will be two courses offered, both of which will require careful navigation around and through the many gardens beds (out of bounds!!) and under the Wollundry Lagoon bridge.
Weather should be good so we hope to see a big turnout.

New map for TRAC sprint this weekend
Waggaroos will debut a new map on Sunday 29th June with a sprint event at The Riverina Anglican College (TRAC). The map is typical “campus” terrain, but features a number of unusually shaped buildings, many passageways and canopies and a few large open areas. As is quite normal for these types of map, there is also some construction work taking places meaning a section of the map will be marked as out of bounds.
There will be two courses on offer, 3.0km and 2km, both with similar navigational challenges. Both will also feature a “map flip”, meaning competitors will complete part of their course them turn the map over to reveal the second part.
Starts will be available between 10am and 11:30am, with course closure at 12:30pm.
To assist with numbers for map printing, please email waggaroos2650@gmail.com by 5pm Friday 23rd June and indicate which course you intend to do.
Access to the school is off Farrer Road in North Wagga, with car park entry from the eastern end of the school only. The diagram below shows how to access the parking.

Please drive slowly and carefully through these to avoid vehicle damage.

Rocky Hill event attracts a few new comers
The club event on Rocky Hill saw a couple of young first-timers trying orienteering, with James (a local lad who lives next to the hill) and Kingsley (attended our recent Riverina Schools Champs) both trying out the easy course. James unfortunately missed one control but otherwise enjoyed the experience. Kingsley had a nice run until the last control where he saw a snake! Understandably, he was a bit frightened and became a bit lost, but he managed to relocate and finish. Despite the snake scare, he has joined our club!
We also had a couple of members from other clubs run the longer hard course: Geoff Todkill from Newcastle and Sally Barlow from Dandenong Ranges. Sally is really now a local, living and working in Wagga. New Zealander and CSU student, Alice Drury, also ran the long and she has now joined Waggaroos.
Ryder Seaman tackled his first hard navigation course and successfully completed the shorter hard course (perhaps with a little bit of coaching on-course from his Grandma).

Waggaroos outstanding at Aust Champs
A small group of Waggaroos members travelled to the recent Australian Orienteering Championships, in and around Armidale, and their results were outstanding.
On the weekend of 28/29 Sept, the Aus Middle and Relay Champs were held at a new map Glenburnie, near Uralla. In the Middle the results were:
Debbie Davey 1st W65A
Briohny Seaman 1st W40A
Logan Seaman 3rd M10A
And a big congrats to Alex Davey who was Controller for the Middle Distance.
In the Relays, Debbie was a member of the NSW team who finished 3rd in the W65A, whilst Briohny teamed with new Wagga resident Bec George, and Mel Thomas in the NSW W21E team, finishing 5th.
On the 2nd weekend, 5/6 October, the Long and Sprint Champs were held. The Long was back at Glenburnie and Waggaroos achieved a treble of wins:
Logan Seaman
M10A
Briohny Seaman
W40A
The carnival finished with the Sprint at the Uni of New England. No Waggaroos placed, however Briohny was selected in the Australian Bushrangers team for the race in the women’s elite class (vs NZ Pine Stars) and finished a credible 12th.

Back to back events for Waggaroos
Waggaroos will hold their 2nd event in as many weeks with a town sprint on the Victory Memorial Gardens map on Sunday 18th August. The map extends across Baylis St into the gardens around the Council Chambers and Civic Theatre.
There will be just 2 courses offered at this event, a short and long sprint. Navigational difficulty for these courses is generally easy, with an emphasis on route choice with lots of controls in a small area. The courses will be suitable for newcomers or those will limited experience as well as those more experienced runners who want a fast race.
Crossing Baylis St is a route choice in itself, as there are 2 underpasses and 2 pedestrian crossing! These are compulsory crossing points (i.e. please do not cross elsewhere) and will be marked on the map.
Courses are open between 10am and 11am, with course closure at 12 noon (earlier than usual due to short courses), with the meeting point near the stage area on the western side of the Gardens.
Waggaroos local event this weekend
This Sunday, 11th August, Waggaroos will hold a local event in Livingstone National Park. Course setter John has advised there will be a variation to our normal list of courses, adding a “Goanna” course in place of the usual Long and Short hard navigation options. The normal Moderate and Easy courses will be offered.
The Goanna course is a novelty course that, as well as having classic point-to-point orienteering legs, also includes a couple of legs with the option to select which of two controls you want to visit, and also a group of controls that can be visited in any order.
The event is open to everyone and start times will be open between 10am and 11am. Course closure is at 1:30pm.,
Directions: travel south from Wagga on Holbrook Rd, turn left into O’Brien’s Creek Rd, then right into Wrigley’s Rd (look for O signs). Click here for location map.
Interclub #5 at Goombargana Sunday 28th July
AWOC will host Interclub #5 this Sunday on the Goombargana map, which is located west of Walbundrie. This map is divided into two very distinct and different types of terrain: open fields with scattered rock and heavy bush with lots of big granite!
As usual, there will be four courses offered: 4.7km long hard, 3.8km short hard (both with complex navigation), 2.9km moderate (easier navigation but still challenging the competitor), 2.4km easy (straight forward navigation using fences, tracks or similar features to guide the competitor). Assistance will be available for newcomers or less experienced orienteers. Entry is open to everyone.
Waggaroos trail AWOC by a big margin on the Interclub points score, so a big turnout is needed to help us reduce the lead!
To get to this event from Wagga Wagga, travel to Culcairn and then Walbundrie. Follow the signs to Albury through Walbundrie then, after crossing Billabong Creek, turn right onto Daysdale Rd towards Berrigan. After about 15km, turn left towards Howlong/Corowa and after another 3.5km turn left into the property.
OpenStreetMap : zoom to marker for entrance to property.
Starts are open between 10am and 11am with course closure at 1pm. The map is on private property, so strictly no dogs and no fires!
Wolfram Sunday 21st July
Orienteering this Sunday is a bit closer to home than the recent events, with a local event on our Wolfram map at the southern (Burrandana) end of Livingstone National Park.
The usual range of courses will be offered, with Easy, Moderate and Hard navigation options. The Easy course will be suitable for beginners, and we will have experienced orienteers on hand to provide an introduction to orienteering.
Courses will be open for starts between 10am and 11am, with a strict course closure of 1:30pm, to allow for control collection before we run out of daylight!
To get there, travel south from Wagga on Holbrook Rd for about 30km, then turn left into Burrandana Rd and follow for another 10km before turning left into the National Park. Follow the O signs to the assembly and parking location. Click here for a Google map link.
Waggaroos win in Narrandera
It was great to see a number of orienteers from Canberra (Ann and John Scown), Launceston (Ken McLean), Griffith (the Dickie family) and Melbourne (Warwick Davis) join AWOC and Waggaroos in Narrandera at this Interclub Challenge event and enjoy Deb’s courses. Deb managed to keep most controls near the top of the ridge thereby minimising most of the serious descents and climbs. The rocky terrain took its toll however, with a number of competitors suffering falls of varying magnitude, with Julie Gooding’s rolled ankle leading to her unfortunate DNF.
Waggaroos won the day amassing 44 points to AWOCs 28 but are still well behind after 4 events. Ryder Seaman and new club member Ian Hookway (from Leeton!) led the way with good wins on the Easy and Moderate courses respectively. Extra congratulations to Ian given it was only his second event with the club. Briohny Seaman led the whole way around the Long course until the very end when Nick Mousley (AWOC) managed to sneak ahead with a very fast 500m run to the finish from the last control.

Interclub series moves to Narrandera
Interclub Challenge event #4 against Albury-Wodonga Orienteers will be held in Narrandera on Sunday 7th July. Come along, compete in your chosen course and earn points for Waggaroos as AWOC currently holds a BIG lead!
The event will be held in the bushland on the northern side of Bundidgerry Creek just on the eastern edge of Narrandera, near the Rocky Waterholes. The map is quite steep and rocky in places.
Starts are available between 10am and 11am, with course closure at 1pm. The normal range of Interclub courses will be offered: long hard: 5km; short hard: 3.2km; moderate 2.4km, Easy 1.7km. The map is quite steep and rocky in places, thus courses have been planned a little shorter than normal.
Click here for the assembly location.
NSW Sprint Championships
The small contingent from Waggaroos who attended the NSW Sprint Championships in Wollongong met with considerable success.
Briohny Seaman won the W21A class and Debbie Davey won W65A. Ryder Seaman was 3rd in the M12A class, whilst Alex Davey finished 4th in M65A.
With three placing from just 4 competitors, Waggaroos are certainly punching above their weight at this level!

Albury’s big win in Interclub
Albury-Wodonga recorded a big home win in the 3rd Interclub event held on the Beechworth Gorge map. The event was part of the Vic Bush series which has separate courses for men and women, so the scoring for this interclub is slightly different to the norm.
AWOC won the men’s long hard course 29-1, with Nick Mousley leading the way. Unfortunately, Waggaroos only starter, Jack Janetzki, punched a incorrect control and was a DNF. The women’s long hard was a better result for Wagga with Briohny Seaman and Debbie Davey taking 1st and 2nd places ahead of Helen Robinson, giving Waggaroos a 15-6 win.
Alex Davey pipped Andrew Mason (A) to win the short hard men’s for Wagga. AWOC had a 20-2 win on the women’s course. Lead by Emma Flower and Liz Wood. Angela Farrell, scoring Wagga’s points.
The moderate course was a clean sweep for AWOC in both men’s and women’s, with no Waggaroos starters. Norm McCann and Ronice Goebel were the respective winners. Clare Vincent score 4 points (to AWOCs 8) on the Easy course. The final score on the day was 94-29 to AWOC and they now lead overall by 217-86!
Interclub series in Victoria this Sunday
The 3rd event in the Interclub series with Albury Wodonga club will be held in Beechworth this Sunday, 23rd June. The event will be part of a 2-day Victoria bush series being hosted by AWOC.
AWOC have a strong lead after the opening 2 events so it would be great to see a big turnout from Waggaroos to try to reduce that lead.
Sunday’s event is on the Beechworth Gorge map, with starts between 10am and 12 noon. Courses 2 to 5 of the Vic Series will double as the 4 classes for the Interclub event.
Directions: drive to Beechworth. Turn right (north-west) into Camp St. Follow Camp St to the Powder Magazine car park. Park as directed by marshals. Do not approach the parking area along the Gorge Road as this is part of the route to the arena. The arena is approximately 400m from the Powder Magazine car park along Gorge Road. Please take care walking along Gorge Road as visibility is relatively limited.
Learn to Orienteer session 4 at CSU
Waggaroos 4th and final (for 2024) Learn to Orienteer coaching session will be held this Sunday 16th June at Charles Sturt University, commencing at 9:00am. The session will focus on sprint orienteering, and will explain the different control sites, symbols, mapping and techniques used in these events. As usual, a Waggaroos club event will follow the training and participants are encouraged to stay and take part in this. A small fee ($11 for seniors, $10 for juniors) is payable for this event. The club event will offer a range of courses, from easy to hard navigation around the university campus and adjoining rocky hill.
The meeting point is carpark 5, on the right hand side of Darnell-Smith Drive.

Waggaroos perform well at KBIII
The small group of Waggaroos attending the KBIII event at Rylstone have performed very well. The 3-day event was held on terrain varying from scrubby bush land, broad spur-gully to complex (and spectacular) sandstone rock.
Debbie Davey was a standout for Waggaroos, winning all three days in her W65A class for a strong overall win. After a slow start on Day 1, Logan Seaman won days 2 and 3 for 2nd overall in M10A. Briohny Seaman was up and down across the 3 days but finished 3rd overall in a competitive W21A field, whilst Alex Davey improved across the 3 events to also finish 3rd overall in M65A. Unfortunately, Ryder Seaman missed a control on Day 3, having performed well on days 1 and 2 in M12A.
Liz Wood, from our neighbouring Albury-Wodonga club, overcame a poor day 1 to win W70A.

Riverina Schools day an great success
The 2024 Riverina Schools day was a great success, with 122 students from five schools in Wagga Wagga and Colleambally taking part, the latter making the 2.5 hour bus journey each way for the day! Many students were experiencing orienteering for the first time.
Warm, sunny conditions made for a pleasant day on Willan’s Hill in Wagga Wagga and the students performed very well, with close racing in both the individual and relay events. All schools enjoyed success in the individual races.

Good turnout to Waggaroos first Learn to Orienteer session
There was a pleasing response to Waggaroos first Learn to Orienteer session at Willan’s Hill, with six families (16 individuals) participating. After a couple of activities to demonstrate the difference between navigating and treasure hunting, and the importance of orientating the map, the group went on a map walk in which various symbols were matched to ground features, and techniques associated with route choice planning and execution were practiced. Participants were then able to complete a short course by themselves, and all managed this successfully. A few then followed up by undertaking the 1.6km Easy course of the Waggaroos local event that followed the Learn To Orienteer session.
Harrison Moore and William Rennison ran together for most of the way with Harrison just edging William out for second place. Fastest time on the Easy course was by Waggaroo Eddie Mestan.
Pauline Moore just held off Wes Campbell on the 2.8km Moderate course, and Goldseeker member, James Lithgow, won the Short Hard course ahead of WaggaRoos Chontelle Dailey. Caleb Addison was the only participant on the 4.8km Hard course and posted a time that would have been competitive on the other shorter courses.

Wagga Beach Summer Series results
Waggaroos 2023-24 Summer series resumed last Sunday morning at Wagga Beach where, despite an earlier than usual start time of 8:30am, temperatures were already very high. It’s a new year but the Addison’s continue to dominate the results with Caleb leading home his brother Seb with another promising young competitor in Gabriel James close behind in 3rd place. The Addison’s are clearly enjoying their orienteering and have now all become members of Waggaroos, along with their father Brad.
There were a couple of newcomers at the beach, with Michael Osbourne completing his first event (and unfortunately, likely his last with Waggaroos as he is leaving Wagga!) and the Roche group also enjoying their first taste of our sport.
Thanks to Chontelle for her course planning and day organisation.
